There are different ways to classify a car petrol engine--some of which are cycles, cooling, valve arrangement, cylinder arrangement, cylinder arrangement, air fuel.
This website, however discusses the classification of petrol engines based on compression, which tells how much can an engine compress air and petrol. It discusses high-compression engines, as well as low-compression engine. It also gives a bried discussion about catalytic converters.
